Zingg was born in the town of Montbéliard in eastern France where he first began to paint the rustic landscapes for which he later became so well-known. At the age of twenty, he won a scholarship to study in Paris and did so at the École des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Fernand Cormon. After a year of study, he began to win prizes, including the second Prix de Rome and a landscape prize. On his first attempt, his work was accepted at the Salon des Artistes Français. During the next four years, he won a number of medals and prizes and was awarded a fellowship to study abroad.
Zingg carefully studied Cézanne who was undoubtedly one of the major influences on his work. After the First World War, Zingg began to exhibit at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne paintings in a modernist style which owed much to the great master of Aix.
In the 1920s and 30s, Zingg exhibited frequently in Paris at the various Salons. In 1930 he was made a Knight of the Légion d’honneur and was also named to the jury of the Salon d’Automne. In 1937 he was awarded the Grand Prize at the Exposition Universelle.
Zingg also designed tapestries for the Aubusson and Gobelins factories, and was the vice-president of the society dedicated to the art of fresco painting. Around 1925, Zingg was one of the artists selected to decorate with frescoes the columns of the famous Montparnasse brasserie, La Coupole.
Zing’s work is found in numerous museum collections including those of the Musée d’Art Moderne à Paris and the Musée de la Ville de Paris, as well as in the museums of Besançon, Montbéliard, Dijon, Belfort, Grenoble, Lyon, Strasburg, Mulhouse, Abbeville, Le Havre, and Collioure. Various retrospectives of his work have been held, the most recent at the Musée de Pont-Aven (2004) and in Paris at the Musée Bourdelle (1990).
