Edouard d'Apvril (1843-1928)

D’Apvril was born in Grenoble and first studied at the Académie de Grenoble with the painter Félix Cottavoz. In 1866 he went to Paris and studied under Isidore Pils at the École des Beaux-Arts. On an extended visit to Holland, d’Apvril was entranced by the small and intimate paintings of the Dutch master Peter de Hooch and his followers, and thereafter emulated their naturalistic approach to genre painting, producing many tiny works with a warm palette, often depicting humble people and their children.

He exhibited in the Salon de Paris from 1868 to 1884. In 1981 his work was included in an exhibition of portraits at the Foundation Hébert d’Uckermann in Grenoble. His work is also found in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Grenoble.
