Zacharie Noterman (1820-1890)


Zacharie Noterman, a Belgian artist, born in Gant, and his brother, Emmanuel, were both known for their charming depictions of animals and genre scenes. He first lived in Antwerp, and then moved to Paris where he settled permanently toward the end of his life. He is remembered mainly for his paintings of dogs and monkeys and for circus scenes. He was particularly skilful in his handling of light effects.
