Henri Santin (1846-1899)

Saintin, born in Paris, studied principally with Isidore Pils and Edme Saint-Marcel. He was an excellent painter of landscapes and genre scenes, in both oil and watercolor. Saintin first exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1867 with a painting entitled Mare sous bois au Val-Saint-Germain en hiver (Pool Beneath the Wood of Val-Saint-Germain in Winter). He became known for such paintings of woods, river banks, and pools, often in Brittany. In the Salon of 1873, he exhibited Sentier dans la forêt (The Path in the Forest), which is now in the Museum of Montpellier. According to a pencil inscription on the verso, this painting was done that same year.

Saintin also traveled to Italy, a trip that produced several views of Venice. In addition ot the landscape in the museum in Montpellier, his work is found in museums in Auxerre, Bayonne, Besançon, Tarbes and Tourcoing.
