Holtzmann, born in the village of Börsch in Alsace, was a gifted draughtsman, painter, and engraver. He worked mostly in Strasbourg at the end of the 19th century and in the early years of the 20th century. Today his work is extremely rare.
The somber beauty of these drawings is probably a reflection of the grim times Strasbourg was experiencing in 1916 during the First World War when the Germans and the French were engaged in an intense struggle for the disputed territory of Alsace. they can be seen as meditations on the simple rituals and pleasures of life that are a source of comfort during difficult times.
