Edmond Jacquement ((b. 1902))

Jacquement, born in Lioges, was a painter who exhibited in Pars at the Salon des Indépendants. He was especially know for his work in enamels. This lively watercolor and gouache is of Barcelona’s Barrio Chino (Chinese District), and probably dates from the 1930s. NO Chinese ever lived in the Barrio Chino: it was so called because it was near the Barcelona docks where ships left for the Far East. Until it was gentrified and sanitized for the Olympics in 1992, it had a colorful reputation as an area of narrow alleys, louche bars, and dimly-lit nightclubs. In 1992, Spanish film-maker José Luis Guerin made a charming documentary film about the transformation of the district and used old footage that showed what the area was like in its more notorious days.
